Financial Education Intensive Pre-Conference Session: Content and Skills for Making Financial Education Effective and Engaging

The AFI Program Resource Center is pleased to offer a one-day session for AFI grantees/subgrantees as part of its Financial Literacy Enhancement Initiative. This training will provide practitioners with opportunities to develop skills and learn key content to become great facilitators of financial education. Starting with the principles of adult learning, participants will learn about methods to animate financial education content in ways that resonate with their target audiences. Participants will also learn techniques for managing challenging dynamics, ways of addressing important but often forgotten elements of financial literacy and strategies for creating effective ongoing financial education opportunities. The training will also cover assessing knowledge and skill attainment and training evaluation. Participants will leave the training with a toolbox of resources and training approaches for specific areas of content including budgeting, credit, investing, consumerism and asset protection.
NOTE: Priority for attendance at this session will be given to AFI grantees/subgrantees. Non-AFI grantees/subgrantees may attend on a space-available basis.

Native Asset Building Pre-Conference Session
Presented by Oweesta Corporation, CFED, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and First Nations Development Institute
This one-day pre-conference session will provide the opportunity for native asset-building practitioners to share their knowledge and experience and network with others in the field. Participants working with financial education, Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), entrepreneurship, homeownership and investor education programs will discuss their best practices and challenges. They will also hear about resources to support strong institutions like native Community Development Financial Institutions and asset-building strategies such as affordable lending, IDAs, Earned Income Tax Credit outreach and free tax preparation services. Representatives from native asset-building coalitions will talk about their formation, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss launching coalitions in their regions.
